Xbox’s Initiative Studio Could be Working on a New Perfect Dark Game

Microsoft’s initiative Studio is rumoured to be working on a new Perfect Dark title, that could transition to third person gameplay according to new claims.

Rare’s fondly remembered shooter, would certainly interest fans and bring a sense of nostalgia to people like myself who played the original Perfect Dark on Nintendo 64 with friends.

Initiative based in Santa Monica, is a studio featuring a creative team who have worked on titles such as Tomb raider, God of War and the Uncharted series.

There have been many rumours over the last couple of years to suggest what the studio could be working on, with Phil Spencer the Head of Xbox even commenting that they could be developing a new game for a legacy IP.

Inside Project Info?

Earlier this year a former designers CV was seen on LinkedIn to show a game with “weapons, gadgets, and a camera surveillance system.”

The latest indication comes from journalist Jeff Grubb who popped into the chat for Kinda Funny Daily to drop the bomb on fans

15 Years and Counting

We haven’t had a Perfect Dark game since 2005’s Perfect Dark Zero on the Xbox 360, which dabbled in third person gameplay and was actually one of the first 360 games I played.

The CV from LinkedIn would certainly suggest something akin to Splinter Cell, and with nothing but cameos from Sam Fisher and only teasers from Ubisoft, this would be a welcome title.

Xbox Head Phil Spencer has previously said in 2018:

“When (studio head, Darrell Gallagher) left Activision we started to have a discussion about what he wanted to do next.

I think he really loved his time with Crystal Dynamics working on Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, kind of re-working some of that franchise.

We were talking about some things in our past that might be interesting… nothing to announce yet, but just some things that he might want to go work on.”

Spencer also said Initiative were ““challenging themselves to do new things (and old things) in new ways.”

An Avengers Style Team Up

Darrell Gallagher and Dabiel Neuberger, game designer led the Tomb raider games produced by Crystal Dynamics, whilst Initiative has also recruited the weapon designer from hit battle royale Apex Legends.

Lead Designer Drew Murray was influential in Sunset Overdrive’s development at Insomniac and there are many staff members who worked on God of War including Brain Westergaard the games senior Managing Producer.

Initiative has mentioned revealing it’s current project in 2020, so I guess we’ll have to just wait and hope for now, but Perfect Dark could turn people heads towards the new Xbox console.
