It’s something that Blizzard long maintained would never be done. However, a couple years ago, they started sending cease and desist orders to owners of servers emulating World of Warcraft classic. Fast forward to Blizzcon 2017, and Blizzard finally announced that they were working on World of Warcraft: Classic! Now we finally have a release date. Fans can dive into Classic Azeroth from the 26th and 27th of August 2019!
What is World of Warcraft: Classic?
WoW Classic is taking the game right back to the start, before the first expansion, The Burning Crusade. It is a faithful recreation of World of Warcraft from 2004-2006, using Patch 1.12: Drums of War to build the game. This impacts a number of systems present in the game now, with fundamental changes to classes and progression.
The game has changed drastically over the years. At release, there were 9, rather than that 12 classes present in the game now.
Some of these classes had lore-congruent, faction/race-based restrictions. For example, only Horde races could be Shaman, while only Alliance races could be Paladin. These restrictions will be a welcome return for many.
Likewise, progression is now more streamlined. Classic WoW allowed you to select talents from three trees within your class. An interesting inclusion is the spell ranks. As your level increased, you unlocked talent ranks. In order to learn these skills, you would have to travel to a capital city to Class Trainers. While a little inconvenient, it is definitely a welcome return of a nice RPG element!
Getting around the map will take a lot longer in Classic. There was no flying in classic WoW, and you couldn’t even use a mount until level 40!
What Will be Included?
The game is very different now to how it launched. WoW Classic will launch with the two main continents, Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms in their original form, prior to the events of The Burning Crusade.
Blizzard have also demonstrated their commitment to the recreation, by providing a developmental roadmap of six phases. Each of these phases will introduce new dungeons, items and raids. These will launch in the same order they were originally released in.
It has also been confirmed that the world events that coincided with these dungeons and raids, will also happen in WoW Classic.
How Much Will It Cost?
You will not need to buy a copy of WoW Classic. It is included in your subscription. All you need to do create a new toon on the classic servers.
