What’s Going On with Marvel’s Spider-Man?

Okay, so, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be backwards AND forwards compatible, but Marvel’s Spider-Man on the PS4 won’t be, unless you get the Remastered edition, which you can only get via the Ultimate Edition of the Miles Morales game…?

Despite previous allusions to the contrary, it seems a few chief players aren’t sticking to the norm for next-gen upgrades.

Case-in-point, Sony’s decisions regarding Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

A recently announced Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales will include a remaster of the original game for PlayStation 5. And, to be clear, this debacle is concerning the remastered edition of the PlayStation 4 Spider-Man game. The base game that many will already own is backwards-compatible. I think.

Anyway.

The cliff notes of it are; if you currently own Spider-Man, you won’t be able to upgrade it to the remastered next-gen edition without buying Miles Morales Ultimate Edition. Meaning, yes, it’s another Control debacle again. The only way to play Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5 is to buy the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition. Sony is not offering any other alternatives at this point.

In fact, here’s Sony’s statement on the matter;

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered is an enhanced version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, [and] is included as part of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 5. In addition, players who purchase Miles Morales on PlayStation 4 can upgrade at no additional cost to the PS5 version [of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales]. They can take advantage of a paid-upgrade to download Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered.

There are no plans currently to offer Marvel’s-Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone. Players with a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man [for PS4] can purchase Miles Morales Ultimate Edition to experience Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 also will be backwards compatible on PS5″.

Yep.

Of course, this does not affect Miles Morales being forward/backward compatible. If you buy any version of the new game, you can upgrade it for free.

Now, I know most people will already have Spider-Man on PS4 and might not want it on PS5. And that is a fair point. However, to be able to experience a more fleshed-out version of the game, with all of the PS5’s bells-and-whistles, anyone interested will have to pay out twice. And no matter which side of the fence you sit, that isn’t consumer-friendly practice.

Again, yes, if you own the standard Spider-Man PS4 game, you can play it on your PS5 at no additional cost. You won’t benefit from next-gen overhauls, but you can still play it. IF you want the game to look like its Miles Morales counter-part in terms of next-gen upgrades, you will have to fork out for it.

Insomniac recently made the announcement about Spider-Man: Remastered, stating how it isn’t simply an “up-res” of the PS4 version;

“The remaster for the PS5 is no simple up-res, as many of the game’s art assets have been completely updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. You’ll see better-looking characters with improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation (including our new, next-generation Peter Parker). You’ll also see ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching further into the distance, and the same optional performance mode offered on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, allowing you to finally play the game at a targeted 60fps frame rate. We’ll be supporting near-instant loading, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback. Lastly, we’re adding three amazing new Spider-Man suits, new photo mode features, and even new trophies for those of you looking to Platinum the game all over again”.

I mean, that sounds impressive, right? Completely overhauling the game’s art and draw-distance is only scratching the surface. What is not shown is that your previous Spider-Man save files will not transfer over. So, for newcomers, it’s not necessarily a bother, but it is making the PS4 game look obsolete the more we see of it. Which, again, isn’t the most consumer-friendly of practices.

So, the decision is simple; do you want bog-standard PS4 on your PS5 for free? Or a prettier, more fluid, and crisper-in-every-conceivable-way PS5 overhaul for a much-loved game but at a steep price? I’m sure there’s a quote about great power in there somewhere…
