Sega has announced that its long thought dead Virtua Fighter is back… albeit as an E-Sports project.
Announced via Twitter and the Tokyo Game Show 2020, not much is revealed apart from a small teaser, showing mostly esports footage from previous tournaments.
But glimpsed at the end is Akira Yuki, one of the better-known fighters from the games. Take a look below:
Now if you can’t read Japanese don’t worry here’s your translation:
The monumental tower of the case game is finally back in e-sports! “Virtua Fighter x esports project” announced!
“Virtua Fighter”, which was born as the world’s first 3D fighting game in 1993, will be restarted in Japan to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA’s establishment. Stay tuned for future updates!
Eww E-Sports, Why not a full game?
We’ve not heard from the franchise since 2010’s Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown ( A remake of 2006’s Virtua Fighter 5), so it’s been a while, console and arcade wise. We have been treated to two mobile games back in 2014 and 2016, but we can brush over these as poor imitations of the real thing (and real VF experience to boot).
Let’s just hope, if the E-Sports project takes off, we might see a new game announced by Sega soon…it is their 60th Aniversary this year so you never know.
