Do you ever wonder what happened to Valve’s intended Hearthstone-killer? Well, now they are thinking about bringing Artifact back.
When artifact came out it was generally considered a good game. I mean it was developed by Valve, which has a pretty good pedigree when it comes to making games. PC Gamer said in their review that:
“Not only is Artifact’s depth remarkable, it also doesn’t come at any great loss of accessibility.”
Regardless of this, Artifact was a big fiasco. Two months after the release the player base was decimated. And three months after release the Artifact twitch-category was a cesspool for porn, memes… and worse.
However, Valve’s boss, Gabe Newell was rather serene about the whole ordeal. In an interview with Edge Magazine Newell had this to say:
“Artifact was an interesting failure in its first go-round. We were surprised. We thought that it was a really strong product.”
A Second Chance?
Valve has previously stated that they wanted to give Artifact another go. But ever since then, they have been quiet about it. Artifact designers Richard Garfield and Skaff Elias are also no longer working with Valve. In spite of this Newell has said that Valve is working on the game. He even said that the changes are so extensive as to justify the game being called Artifact 2.
It may be a mere coincidence but the Artifact Twitter team posted this.
The caption reads: “First off, we wanted to say thanks for all of your tweets, emails and posts. The continued interest in Artifact has been encouraging, and we sincerely appreciate all of the feedback!”
We can expect more news after Half-Life: Alyx is released on March 23.
