Upgrading to Next-Gen with Ubisoft

With Ubisoft’s Ubisoft Forward happening yesterday we saw what the next titles Ubisoft will release were. But as with the release of Xbox One and PS4, there will be a number of cross generation games. In the previous generation change you were out of luck, if you bought Black Flag on PS3, get your wallet out again for PS4.

However, Ubisoft have gone on record saying that upgrades are now available at no extra cost. This is the case for Watch Dogs Legion, Far Cry 6 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. No mention of Hyperscape at this time.

“Purchase Watch Dogs Legion on PlayStation®4 or Xbox One and upgrade your game to the next-gen version (PlayStation®5 or Xbox Series X) at no additional cost.”

So, this is definitely a good thing for the consumer, but is it something that will happen across all publishers? It would be difficult for another publisher to not offer these upgrades. They would run a strong risk of being villainised if so. And finally, what has caused Ubisoft to make the change for this upgrade, but not the previous? We will know in the coming weeks and months if other publishers decide to follow Ubisoft’s model.
