UK Government Calls For Evidence Against Lootboxes

Could the tyranny of loot boxes finally be coming to an end in the UK? The Department for Digital. Culture, Media, and Sport is working towards gathering evidence against the practice.

Ask yourself this; in your opinion, do lootboxes help train children to gamble?

In the ongoing war against loot boxes, the UK Government could classify them as gambling.

The Guardian reports that the Government is set to call for evidence that loot boxes are training children to gamble. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) has been on the issue since at least last year.

Whilst this might sound redundant at first, the end goal would be a case against loot boxes.

As a result, loot boxes would be tantamount to gambling. Which means they would have to be regulated by the Gambling Commission.

Currently, loot boxes are not regulated within the UK.

There’s no guarantee that anything will happen immediately. However, this might be the final nail in the coffin for loot boxes in the UK at the very least.

Any game that uses loot boxes would need to have their game listed as an 18+. For games like FIFA or NBA 2K, this could be disastrous.

Presently, the UK is one of EA Sports’ biggest markets. And FIFA‘s Ultimate Team is one of the game’s most popular modes. EA’s financial performances would surely suffer as a result.

And, I think we can all agree, if EA is losing money, it’s got to be a good thing!
