Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad, the mobile RPG that brings characters from across the Tom Clancy universe, is to shut down this October, Ubisoft announced today.
The trailer produced much excitement for the game as it starred Sam Fisher, Ubisoft’s long since forgotten super spy, however even with a pretty sizable Season 2 update Ubisoft have said that no more updates are coming for the game and that the servers will be shutting down on the 4th of October this year.
In a Blog Post on the Elite Squad website, the reason for the decision became clearer:
This was not an easy decision, but after exploring multiple options with our teams, we came to the conclusion that it was no longer sustainable. We want to assure you all that we really gave it our best, especially with big updates like Season 2, and it was a truly rewarding experience to work with you, our passionate community!
Of course, Ubisoft hasn’t completely scrapped the idea of free to play games set in the Tom Clancy universe. On Monday Ubisoft announced Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, a FTP 6V6 arena FPS set in the same universe as Elite Squad. Set to release across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Luna and Stadia soon, the game will have full cross-play from launch…at least it won’t fail after a year right……right?
