With The Game Awards 2018, we got far more than just the Game of the Year winners. We were lucky enough to round out the year with numerous new reveals and teases in which some of them can be enjoyed today while others have us looking forward to next year and the years to come. I am happy to compile everything revealed today at The Game Awards in one place so you don’t miss out on anything!
Sayonara Wild Hearts
The first reveal was an indie, Nintendo Switch title from developer Annapurna Interactive. Sayonara Wild Hearts seems like a racer that is heavily focused on music and sound within a cyber-punk looking world. An interesting looking game for sure, and available in 2019. Not long now.
Return to the Savage Planet
Return to the Savage Planet is a new title from the Publishers, 505 Games. It is described to be a first-person adventure game in which you are dropped onto a bright and colourful alien world by Kindred Aerospace, the fourth best interstellar exploration company. While it is bright and colourful, it will no doubt be dangerous so watch your step!
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe
The Stanley Parable is coming to consoles in its Ultra Deluxe version which includes new endings and sequences. At first, I thought it might be a sequel, but this is just as good given how entertaining this game really is. Even the trailer shown today made me actually laugh. This is outstanding for those who haven’t experienced the game before, as well as for those who have and want a reason to dive back in.
Among Trees seems to be a survival game, though it is a definite contrast to the survival games that usually spring to mind such as Rust or DayZ. This title seems far more relaxed, due in part largely to its beautiful art style, colours and music showcased in the trailer. This could be the Stardew Valley of first person survival games (you know what I mean). It goes into steam early access in 2019. and I really look forward to seeing more, I’m a sucker for saturated colours and a relaxed aesthetic.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
I remember playing the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance when I was younger with mates and I always got a kick out of the chaos that was 4 player co-op. I had no expectations of seeing the third instalment appear today if I’m honest and It will be interesting to see what it can bring to the table. Additionally, It is also a Switch exclusive which is a definite change. I can’t wait to see if the Switch is perfect for this game and the “couch co-op” that the console facilities or if it limits it.
Rocket League didn’t have any major announcements aside from a new DLC pack.
Far Cry New Dawn
With a tease earlier in the week, we knew we were in for something Far Cry with a post-apocalyptic setting, but after The Game Awards we now know that what we are getting is Far Cry New Dawn. It looks very much like more Far Cry 5 but in a post-apocalyptic setting which isn’t necessarily bad, but I can’t help but feel it’s too soon with Far Cry 5 only having released in March of this year. Additionally, Far Cry 4 felt largely like Far Cry 3 with a new setting. New Dawn may feel very much like Far Cry 5 and I fear that will mean little innovation in this new entry but only time will tell as we get more details. Even with these criticisms, the environment does look interesting and we know the Far Cry formula works, so I will reserve my judgement.
When I first saw Hades, I immediately thought of Transistor. Not a surprise considering this is a game being made by Supergiant Games who are responsible for Bastion, Transistor and Pyre. Hades is a new roguelike action RPG centred around Greek mythology and, who I can only assume is, the son of Hades in a quest of self-discovery? or just a quest for power and loot. Either way I’m in. It is now available and in early access through the Epic Games store.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey comes from the designer of Assassins Creed and is described as a single-player, open world, exploration, survival game that is set in Africa as far back as 10 million years ago in which we play as our ape ancestors. The game is set to release in 2019.
After dropping out of a space station (ODST style) and landing on what looks a lot like Earth, we see a party of four ready their weapons and move towards a large crater seemingly caused by the wreckage located at the centre of it. This game was described as a session based multiplayer experience in which players will have to work together to succeed but would also be competing against each other.
Dead by Daylight: Darkness Among Us
Dead By Daylight: Darkness Among Us is the new DLC for the game which features a new survivor, killer and map named Jeff Johansen, The Legion and Mount Ormond Resort respectively. The killer seems to be able to assume the identity of a survivor in order to trick other survivors and use the element of surprise to their advantage but we will have to wait for more details before we can clarify what exactly the killers abilities are. But that is not all, it was also announced that Behaviour Interactive are committed to updating Dead by Daylight for at least 5 more years and one of these steps includes the addition of dedicated servers in 2019.
While we have seen a fair amount of Anthem gameplay, we have not seen a lot regarding the story and characters. Casey Hudson explained that this is an area they are going to start inviting players to learn about as we approach the release for Anthem on February 22nd, 2019. The trailer works to further introduce us to the concept of “The Anthem” and the ramifications it has had on the world. We can start to see how societies have endured and the relevance of the Javelins. As well as this, we seem to get a first glimpse at our antagonist who appears to be attempting to wield the power of the anthem to “end all this needless suffering.”
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
My childhood rekindled. It seems the fan favourite Crash Team Racing has been remastered to include all the original content, additional carts and tracks, multiplayer support and leaderboards. This beauty will release on June 21st, 2019.
The Outer Worlds
A new game from Obsidian, the makers of Fallout: New Vegas. The Outer Worlds seems to be Fallout-esque in design but offers its own flare through aesthetic and comedy. When I saw it I thought “Fallout but in Space.” With Fallout: New Vegas being so praised by fans, it will be interesting to see how this lives up to fans expectations and perhaps a change will be especially welcome after the widely criticised Fallout 76 from Bethesda Game Studios.
Dauntless is a free-to-play action RPG currently available on PC and will be coming to PS4 and Xbox in April of 2019.
The Last Campfire
A new title from Hello Games who are now famous for No Man’s Sky. While definitely smaller in scale, this game looks to also be exploration focused in which a small character explores a world much bigger than itself. Very cute, with great art design and the music doesn’t do it any harm either.
PUBG will be receiving an all new map called Vikendi. It is 6x6km lending itself to the frantic nature of Sahnok while retaining the tactical element of Erangel, the original map. New features include being able to see footprints in the snow allowing you to track enemies while adding the pressure that the same thing could be happening to you. Lastly, the G36C assault rifle will be added as a new weapon.
Atlas is the new game coming from the creators of ARK. This time however, instead of dinosaurs, monsters and seemingly magic will roam the lands. Supposedly the game will be able to accommodate 40,000 players in one environment and is 1200 times larger than an ARK server. This sounds impressive and the game looks exciting from both the gameplay and world design perspective, but it will come down to whether or not they can actually pull this off. ,
We were teased by Casey Hudson a week or so ago in the official BioWare blog that Dragon Age news would be coming in some capacity. And this capacity was a teaser trailer that did not reveal anything other than Solas from 2014’s Dragon Age Inquisition uttering a few words coupled with the hashtag #TheDreadWolfRises. This would indicate that the project is a sequel and once we get more details we will have a better idea of the direction BioWare is taking the Dragon Age series.
From the creators of Abzu, Giant Squid have shown off The Pathless. It is visually magnificent and seems to offer a mysterious world to explore in 2019 on the PS4.
Survived By is a rogue-like game in which you are working to eradicate the forces of evil from the world. Or at least trying your best to do so as every time you die, you play as one of your descendants in a continuation of this quest. It has a charming sense of humour and best of all, you can share this experience with your friends. Die together, or alone, again and again. It is free to play and in early access on Steam now.
Stranger Things 3: The Game will follow the events of the upcoming season 3 of the popular Netflix series. It looks to be a 16-bit action game that allows you to control various members of the main cast and deal with whatever troubles have come around this time for season 3. With no release date, it is likely we will see more of this game as we get closer to season 3 releasing.
Mortal Kombat 11
From the beloved NetherRealm Studios comes Mortal Kombat 11, the next instalment in the popular franchise. The trailer shows a corrupted Raiden, likely after the events of Mortal Kombat X, fighting Scorpion. After he defeats Scorpion, we see classic Scorpion arrive, whether or not this has story implications is yet to be seen. It could also hint towards tag battles returning. The game will boast new and returning characters as well as an evolution of the variation system that Mortal Kombat X introduced.
After being announced in 2015, Psyschonauts 2 finally has it’s first trailer. Once again, the player takes Razputin on an adventure which will release in 2019.
Devil May Cry 5
A new look at the already announced Devil May Cry 5 with a focus on the story of the game. It seems to be about V and Nero trying to stop a powerful demon from resurrecting and recruiting Dante’s help in the process. The game releases on March 8th, 2019.
Fortnite Season 7
Another new season for Fortnite which will inevitably include new weapons, skins and items as well as The Block. A new area in which player creations will be showcased. These player-made constructions will be made through the new creative-mode on your personal island and shared through the hashtag #FortniteBlockParty.
Rage 2 New Look
While we’ve already seen a decent amount of gameplay for Rage 2, the new trailer highlights the world as well as the frantic and chaotic nature of the game itself. Again, while other trailers have done this, I believe this has been the most effective showcase of the game yet and has actually made me relatively keen for it.
Persona 5 comes to Super Smash Bros.
With no time at all before the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate it was announced that Joker from Persona 5 is joining the fray along with his persona. This is the first of the DLC fighters and teases more crossovers to come.
