The third expansion for the popular indie game, The Binding of Isaac, has been officially in the works for over two years. During this time not much has been shared regarding the content or scope of this final addition. The game did appear in PAX West 2018, but since then developer Edmund McMillen has been largely silent regarding the game. However, yesterday McMillen reveled some more details regarding the expansion.
Since it’s announcement it was known that the expansions is based on the game’s popular Antibirth mod. This mod, created by Vinh, added two new characters and four new areas to the game. With these, Vinh tried to introduce a “True Ending” to the game. Now, McMillen is working with Vinh in order to fit all of Antibirth’s ideas into the canon. Because of this process, it is still unclear which of the original mod’s additions will end up in the official expansion. However, in his recent blog post, McMillen emphasized that it will introduce “a ton more content”. In fact, he went as far as to say that it’s “bigger than Rebirth was to the OG flash game”.
That’s a big deal. Rebirth was a huge overhaul of the original game. Now, McMillen is saying that Antibirth is “basically a sequel at this point”.
As for a release date, the game’s Steam page cites December 31. This looks like a placeholder, but McMillen did say that the expansion is 90% done. Hopefully this means the wait isn’t too long at this point. In any case, McMillen promised to share more details starting the second half of October.
But until then, make sure to let us know what you think of this next expansion. Will it bring you back to The Binding of Isaac? Or did you have enough of it? Tell us in the comments!
