Team17 announced just this week that it was launching its own brand of Worms-branded NFTs.
And, following immense outcry from its gaming community and own staff, it has already reneged on the project!
Taking to Twitter to confirm the move, Team17 stated;
“Team17 is today [1st February] announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project.
We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space”.
Furthermore, Eurogamer reports that Team17 had not even told all members of staff about the proposed NFT project!
When news broke of the project, some of Team17’s closest partners were quick to decry the move. Ghost Town Games [Overcooked!] stated how it, “will never engage with NFTs”, and that the team “does not support NFTs”. Meanwhile, Aggro Crab Games [Going Under] announced it will “not be working with [Team17] on further titles…”
To say the whole thing is messy would be an understatement. It is, perhaps, too early to tell if Team17’s reputation can be rebuilt back up from this. However, the topic of NFTs and gaming studios marking out over them is, sadly, probably not going away anytime soon.
