Super Mario 3D World + Bower’s Fury released last week, and a quick look at the sales reveals it was the best selling game by some margin. Not just that, but it’s the fastest selling release of the year so far. So much so, that it has now sold over 190% more physical copies than the original Wii U release at launch. And all this in physical game sales alone.
For those not in the know, the Switch release is an updated of the 2013 title originally launched on the Wii U. It also comes with a whole new adventure, Bower’s Fury which was absent in the older version. The original only made it to number 14 of the best selling charts when it launched in November 2013. An uncharacteristic miss-step by Nintendo perhaps, coinciding exactly with the launch of the PS4.
Bower’s Fury was an unexpected but welcome addition for the Switch re-release
These giddy stats now put the release as the third best Mario launch title to debut on the Switch. Sales have beaten it’s 2D brethren Super Mario Maker 2 (June 2019) and New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (Jan 2019). But so far it lags just behind the more 3 dimensional releases, Super Mario Odyssey (Oct 2017) and Super Mario 3D All Stars (Sep 2020). All Stars, it’s worth pointing out, dwarfed sales of the re-release, selling almost 3 times more at launch. With the Switch it seems, Nintendo can hardly put a foot wrong.
Other titles of note in last week’s sales include Little Nightmares 2, taking the seventh spot, and Fifa 21 jumping up five places to take third having been discounted below the crucial £30 price point. You can see the full rankings below.

This is yet another example of Nintendo sales dominating consumer charts, something of a common phenomenon seen in recent months. We reported that Nintendo were responsible for 8 of the top 10 best selling Amazon games last year, a trend that could continue throughout 2021 if this early performance is indicative of a continuing trend.
Other games have benefitted from the release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury. 3D All Stars saw a spike of 11% last week, with Odyssey enjoying a 28% sales increase respectively. All told, there are now seven games in the top 20 set in the Mario universe. That’s if you count Green Mario, of course.
