Side Quests Abolished in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

As a long time gaming aficionado, too often I find myself prostrate, kneeling in bitter prayer at the temple of the gaming gods. Cries of “for the love of all things sacred, no more micro-transactions” or “no more, please no more fetch quests” projected skyward to our collective digital deity. Rarely are they answered.

That is, until yesterday, and by none other than Ubisoft, a god of gods. In an article published on Monday, ABG reported on the latest Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla gameplay to sashay across our screens. In it, we voiced an opinion that with the ever-increasing size of open-world RPGs, perhaps bigger isn’t always better. This time it seems, our prayers have been answered.

World events to replace usual filler

Speaking to Gamespot  prior to the Ubisoft Forward event, narrative director Darby McDevitt confirmed that, unlike previous titles Odyssey and Origins, AC Valhalla will not feature side quests in the traditional sense. Instead the focus will be on dynamic world events. These will act as thematic glue, stringing together the story, and weaving a narrative thread.

This is an unprecedented move from Ubisoft, considering the usual pin-cushion of icons that too frequently adorn their world maps. But it is surely a welcome one. The increasing popularity of single player narrative heavy games is on the rise. But filling them to the brim with meaningless bunk feels like a step-backward for the genre. Rockstar continue to raise the bar here. But whether Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla will reach the dizzy heights of Red Dead Redemption 2 in open world building, only time will tell. We remain ever hopeful.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will release on November 17 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Ubisoft confirmed release for the next-gen too, although have yet to release dates.
