SEGA has announced that it is going to delist current digital versions of stand-alone titles found on Sonic Origins.
The list of games to be delisted includes; Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD.
All four titles will be delisted from various digital storefronts on 20th May – the release date of Sonic Origins.
Now, as you may have gathered Sonic Origins is a collection of early Sonic titles that showcases the blue blur’s earliest adventures.
It has caused some controversy online following its convoluted pre-order bonuses.
However, this isn’t the first time in recent history that a publisher has delisted older releases of beloved titles. Just last year, Rockstar delisted the Grand Theft Auto trilogy ahead of the Definitive Edition’s release.
This, of course, was rectified almost immediately following the overwhelming bad press the remasters got at launch. Time will tell whether SEGA will reverse its decision – though, I suppose that depends on how well-received Origins is.
Of note, current editions of Sonic 1 & 2 will remain available via SEGA AGES on Nintendo Switch, whilst Sonic 2 will still be playable via SEGA Genesis on Nintendo Switch Online+.
