Project Scarlett promises a brighter future for Xbox

Ps5 vs. XSX

If you tuned in to watch X019 last week then you may have seen Phil Spencer talking about the future of Xbox…

“I would say one thing we learned from the Xbox One generation is that we will not be out of position on power or price.”

Phil Spencer speaking at London’s X019

Spencer confirmed that Microsoft would not repeat it’s mistake and would not be sold at a higher price than it’s rival, Sony’s PlayStation 5. He went on to say that he wanted Xbox to be a real contender and will be enforcing this with a number of different marketing strategies.

“If you remember the beginning of this generation we were a hundred dollars more expensive and yes, we were less powerful. We started Project Scarlett with this leadership team in place with a goal of having market success.”

One Poor Launch For Xbox

It’s not surprising that Microsoft want to start strongly with Project Scarlett after the Xbox One launched so poorly in comparison to the PlayStation 4. Currently, it’s estimated that Sony outsell Microsoft around 2:1 in the number of consoles sold. Sony still hold the records for best-selling console of all time (PS2 – 155 million units sold) and second best-selling console of all time (PS4 – 102.8 million units sold) compared to the Xbox One which stands around 43.6 million units sold.

Let’s Get Physical…

The Xbox Chief thinks that there are a lot more physical console generations to come despite Microsoft releasing an all digital Xbox One S.

“We had the discussion years ago – do we want to go do another generation? Yes, and do we think there will be multiple [physical console] generations ahead of us? I actually think there probably is.”

That doesn’t mean that game streaming isn’t something that Microsoft aren’t looking into, as proven by their new service; Project xCloud.

Project xCloud will let you play Xbox on your mobile devices

Spencer admitted that game streaming was just one of the many directions in which gaming industry was now heading. He went on to say that owning a box that plays games wasn’t a bad thing and that a world where everything is cloud based just isn’t the world we live in today.

Does that mean cloud based services aren’t viable at this time?

Let’s Look Backwards

Microsoft will continue to focus on cross-play and backwards compatibility.

During X019, the Xbox chief said that the company is going “all in” on Project Scarlett,” and that it’ll be poised to take on the competition, highlighting the console’s features as a draw.

“I want to compete, and I want to compete in the right ways which is why we’re focused on cross-play and backward compatibility .”

Microsoft will be going “All-in” and in order to compete they will be highlighting the console’s features over it’s competitors.

Launching at an affordable price point is definitely going to be a big part of anyone’s decision when looking at either console next year. With Sony planning for a swift transition between the PS4 and PS5, console price could be the biggest game changer for the next generation.

Did you enjoy X019? Are you swayed by either console in particular?
