Sony has announced it is discontinuing the PlayStation 4 Communities function next month. For those who haven’t had the….pleasure…of using the Communities app on PlayStation, the idea was quite sound; you can find a community of like-minded individuals with whom you can share your gaming experiences.
What it ended up being (in my experience) was about 10,000 people using it as an LFG site. This, it turns out, lead to screaming into the void for trials carry in Destiny. Or a competitive match in Overwatch. “MUST PLAY LUCIO“, etcetera. This is as well as the usual levels of sexism and racism you find on the internet these days. Not quite an irredeemable hive of scum and villainy…but getting close.
We will probably see a number of PS4’s functionality closing down as the PS5 takes over as the main console. Thankfully, it will probably be a while before all PS4 legacy content gets the axe due to the sheer volume of PS4s still in use. This, in turn, is thanks (at least in part) to the lack of PS5 availability.
