In case you weren’t already aware, Panic Inc. is in the process of creating a new handheld console. With a crank on the side!
The developer behind indie hits, Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game revealed their handheld to much excitement last summer.
Fast forward to the end of December and an update on the progress of the intriguing mini.
In said update, Playdate developers confirmed they are still on track for the slated 2020 release. Playdate will ship to a handpicked selection of developers to ensure a plethora of content on release. After these previews, pre-orders will then open to the public at large.
By Panic’s own admission, developer response to Playdate has been stunning. With a huge amount of creators wanting to get ‘cranking’ with the mini. Despite this extra step the development is relatively on track, mainly because the hardware is actually ready.
When it releases later this year, the plan is to have a “season” of content. This season will consist of 12 new video games released over 12 weeks. One delivered each week, straight to the console, and signalled by a little light on the machine.
There are already some incredibly talented designers creating content for the Playdate. Even just one name is enough to spark excitement when it’s Keita Takahashi – creator of the absolutely bonkers Katamari Damacy.
So the news that they’re expanding the range of creators seeing the development kit before the launch can only be a good thing. If Panic‘s reputation and updates are anything to go by, there is going to be some truly special games available when Playdate finally hits the shelves.
