Nvidia “Unlaunches” RTX 4080 Following Mounting Criticism

Just weeks after the unveiling of the brand new 40 series, Nvidia is making a surprise u-turn. It seems the company will be “unlaunching” the RTX 4080 graphics card following rising backlash.

Nvidia unveiled the 12GB RTX 4080 in September, together with a much more powerful 16GB model. But the company admits now that it messed up the naming. From a blog post by Nividia,

“The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it’s not named right. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing.”

Nvidia

The upshot is that the 12GB model will no longer launch as planned on November 16th. Instead, only its more powerful, bigger brother will launch on that date.

Criticism has grown following the full spec reveal of the 12GB model. The product didn’t meet consumer expectations, it seems. The RTX 4080 12GB was supposed to start at $899 and include 7,680 CUDA Cores, a 2.31GHz base clock that boosts up to 2.61GHz, 639 Tensor-TFLOPs, 92 RT-TFLOPs, and 40 Shader-TFLOPs.

Compare that vs the 16GB model, coming in with 9,728 CUDA Cores, a base clock of 2.21GHz that boosts up to 2.51GHz, 780 Tensor-TFLOPs, 113 RT-TFLOPs, and 49 Shader-TFLOPs of power. For those in the know, that’s a sizeable upgrade in terms of brute force processing power.

The result is, sadly, those looking for a reasonably priced, top-end card are going to have to wait. The RTX 4080 16GB model will debut next month, priced from $1,199. We are yet to find out how the RTX 4080 12GB will be re-packaged, but it’s unlikely we’ll see it this year.

But what do you think? Were you holding out for an RTX 4080? Disappointed at this U-turn from Nvidia? Come join our discord and let us know your thoughts!
