Earlier this week, Nintendo hosted an investor Q&A. Sifting through the various tidbits on offer, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about the gaming giant’s plans for the console to follow the incredibly successful Switch. In reply, Furukawa said,
“The question of whether we will be able to just as smoothly transition from the Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware is a major concern for us,”
Following this fairly enigmatic answer, the Nintendo president expressed that console transition has not always been a smooth experience. A history of sporadic success in recent years with transitions has taken its toll. From both the DS and highly successful Wii to the relatively disappointing Wii U has clearly left the company cautious. Specifically, Furukawa referenced the difficulty in moving the 77m strong Switch base over to new hardware.
“While we will continue launching new software on the Nintendo Switch, we will also provide services that also use Nintendo Accounts and other IP outside of gaming software. We intend for this to help build a lasting impact with our customers,”
Obviously, Nintendo wants to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. Winning the support and trust of its Switch customers certainly seems to be front and center when regarding its next console. But when exactly that may release is not exactly clear. Both Furukawa and US president Doug Bowser have commented that the Switch is roughly mid-life-cycle. This would mean we will be waiting for a follow-up for another four or so years. So Nintendo’s concern right now is probably nothing to keep you awake at night.
