New Swedish Study Finds That Gaming Is Just As Social As Having Coffee Together

For many of us, playing games is just as much escapism and relaxation as it is sociable and engaging. It wasn’t that long ago gaming was viewed as antisocial and a complete waste of time. To think that playing video games could be equally as cultured as reading books or listening to music was out of the question.

However, as more gamers are growing up and becoming parents themselves this fact is starting to change. Blizzard had a Swedish media company look into how the Swedish people view gaming as a social construct. They asked 1022 people between the ages of 18-79.

  • 43% of Swedes don’t think they utilize their time as well as they could.
  • Internet and social media are considered great time thieves.
  • Young adults consider playing video games online, with friends, time well spent.
  • Nearly no Swedish people think that having coffee with a friend is wasted time.

It should be noted that most people north of 50 still think that video games are a waste of time. On the other hand, 18-49-year-olds think of playing video games as equal to having coffee together or doing sports.
