Following yesterday’s surprise announcement from Lucasfilm Games that a new Indiana Jones game is being developed by Bethesda, Ubisoft has announced that a new open-world Star Wars game is in development.
Julian Gerighty, the director of hits such as The Division 2 and The Crew, will be the games creative director, and did give a small tease about the game, saying that it will be ‘an original Star Wars adventure that is different from anything that has been done before’.
Don’t expect anything too soon though, as the studio behind it, Ubisoft Massive is still in the hiring process for the game, which will be considered canon alongside all the other Star Wars properties.
It comes as Disney look to other studios to produce games as their exclusive multi year deal with EA is coming to end.
That’s no moon….
Disney and EA… a disturbance in the force
It’s been a rocky partnership between the two companies since their multi-year deal back in 2013. While resurrecting the much loved Battlefront franchise, both games had mixed reception especially when it came to the inclusion of microtransactions in Battlefront 2.
However the most recent releases, Star Wars: Squadrons and Jedi: Fallen Order have gone down well with players showing that EA can deliver quality using the Star Wars name.
In a statement, Senior Vice President of Global Games and Interactive Experiences at Disney, Sean Shoptaw, said:
EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward. But we did feel like there’s room for others.
Shoptaw also stated that EA will still play a big part in developing games using the Star Wars IP with ‘Several games in development’.
Following the announcment, EA tweeted to reassure players that they were still working with Disney on thier Star Wars IP.
