New Need for Speed delayed as BF6 takes priority.

EA has announced that the next Need for Speed game will be pushed to 2022, to let Criterion Games, NFS’s developer, to support EA Dice on Battlefield 6, which is due to release later this year.

In an interview with Polygon, EA’s Chief Studio Officer, Laura Miele stressed that neither franchise is in trouble and that Criterion is not being taken off its Need for Speed project.

Criterion owns the Need for Speed franchise; that’s why they managed the remaster (NFS: Hot Pursuit). Anything that’s happening within the Need for Speed brand, they are responsible for, or things come through them to ensure that they’re on board with it.

Miele also stated that ‘Pandemic working conditions and the recent Codemasters acquisition, who will be delivering at least one game this year, made reassigning Criterion a rational call.’

Criterion worked on the remaster as well as the original.

The two studios have worked together in the past, most notably on Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s Starfighter Assult mode and Battlefront V‘s Firestorm battle royale mode.

On top of Criterion working on BF6, DICE LA has also been working on the games live service components, which include: post-release seasons and new content updates.

While we don’t have any details on Battlefield 6 at this present time, We know that it will return to a modern-day setting, with promises of a ‘never before seen scale’… whatever that means.
