Back in E3 2019 we got a trailer for a sequel for Breath of the Wild. While that game might be some ways off, yesterday Nintendo gave us something to chew on. They announced a new Hyrule Warriors game. The game, called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will be set 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild, during the events that lead to the fall of the kingdom.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Announcement Trailer
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the Nintendo Switch (2017). The game broke away from the usual Zelda game format. Instead of having the player walk from one dungeon to another, this time the game went with a more open world approach. The player gets to decide where to go and when. So much so that you can actually walk right into the final boss fight once your done with the tutorial area.
In terms of narrative, Breath of the Wild presents the player with a war-torn land. The characters in the game keep referring to an event that happened 100 years prior called “The Calamity”. Throughout the game the player needs to piece together what actually transpired that led to the current state of the land. This being an open world game, it’s up to the player to decide how much they want to invest in the story. You can look for every scrap of information or disregard it entirely. It is these events 100 years before Breath of the Wild that the new game will explore.
In terms of gameplay, this is not the first Hyrule Warriors game. Back in 2014, Nintendo released a Hyrule Warriors game for the Wii U. The game combined characters and story elements from the Zelda franchise with gameplay from the Warriors franchise. This type of gameplay (in a nutshell) involves controlling one character while fighting huge armies of AI controlled grunts. Hyrule Warriors received a Definitive Edition for the 3DS in 2016. This same version was re-released on the Switch in 2018.
The Announcement Direct for the Game
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is developed by Koei Tecmo. It will allow players to control a “wide variety of playable characters”. The trailer mainly shows Link, Zelda, Urbosa, Mipha, Daruk and Revali (here’s hoping for Hestu). Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity releases on November 20, 2020.
