New American Law Set To Stop Console Scalpers

The fact that there is a console shortage in the gaming world isn’t new to anybody. Stores and websites still have a hard time stocking their shelves with PS5s and Xbox Series X/S. The main reason for this is the lack of semiconductor chip required to produce the devices. However, the scourge spelt scalpers are also a direct cause for the lack of next-gen consoles.

Scalpers use software to buy tens of thousands of consoles just to sell them later on at exorbitant prices on sites like eBay. More specifically they are using bots to snatch up any consoles as soon as they are available to regular consumers. But there might be a remedy to all of this soon.

Grinch Bots Act

A number of American senators have proposed a law called “Stopping Grinch Bots Act” in an attempt to put an end to the use of these types of online bots. Paul Tonko is one of these senators and he has this to say about the proposal:

“At a time when families should be able to spend time with their loved ones, digital ‘Grinch bots’ are forcing Americans to scour online sites in the hopes of finding an affordable gift or paying exorbitant prices for a single toy.”

The same group of people previously proposed legislation that would make it illegal to use bots in order to buy concert tickets and similar products.

What do you think about all of this? Should scalping be banned or is it part o the game? Are you one of the lucky ones to have gotten a next-gen console for a regular price? Let us know in the comments.
