NEO: The World Ends with You Gets a Release Date

Square Enix has uploaded a release date trailer for NEO: The World Ends with You. The trailer starts with introducing the game’s characters and their voice actors. You don’t only get to see the main characters, but also the characters of rival teams from the game. Following that the trailer shows a peak at different gameplay elements. From exploration, to combat to customization (in the form of gear and “psych pins” that enable different skills). These elements are similar to the original’s, only now they occur in a 3D space rather than top-down 2D.

Moving from 2D to 3D

Finally, the trailer shows off some story elements from the game. The premise seems identical to the original’s where the characters in the game are part of a lethal game. To escape the game with their lives they need to win it, facing off different teams in the process. We also get to see how story scenes will play out during the game. While the game itself is 3D, story scenes and dialog will appear in a 2D, comics-like aesthetic. The trailer ends with a scene from the game confirming that Neku, the protagonist of the previous game, will also appear in the new game.

The World Ends with You franchise (which it is now, seeing as it has more than one game) has remained in the edges of public awareness in recent years. The original game released for the Nintendo DS back in 2007/2008. The characters of the game later appeared in the 3DS exclusive (until it was remastered) Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance in 2012. The original The World Ends with You then got a remaster for the switch in 2018 in the form of a “final remix”. It seems as if Square Enix thinks there’s enough of an audience for this franchise as back in November of last year they announced the sequel.

Neo: The World Ends with You releases on July 27th on Nintendo Switch and PS4. You can check out the most recent trailer here.
