This evening NetherRealm Studios held the long-awaited Mortal Kombat 11 reveal stream, after the game was first revealed during The Game Awards 2018 last month. From the reveal we got an insight into how the game will play and a taste of what is to come from the game’s story mode.
Here are the current details we know from the reveal stream:
While most of the characters on this list are returning from Mortal Kombat X (MKX), Skarlet & Baraka haven’t made their appearances since MK9, which ended up being surprise picks. Geras is the only confirmed new character to the cast. The trailer showcases him as a brawler type character who is able to manipulate time by freezing enemies in the air, rewinding time during certain moves and sending enemies through portals. He can also use the power of sand to conjure up weapons, spikes and teleport around the screen.

Custom Character Variations:
In MKX, players were allowed to choose between 3 preset variations of each character giving them access to different combo attacks and special moves. MK11 expands on this feature by allowing the player to create up to 3 custom character variations. You will be able to customise visual gear including masks, clothing and weapons, which was first introduced in NetherRealm recent title Injustice 2. Cosmetics can also be changed with customising your character’s skin, intro cinematics and even their finishers such as fatalities and brutalities. Finally, you can customise the character’s abilities, where from what has been teased so far, you can select from a pool of special moves that take up a limited number of slots. This will allow you to choose what playstyle fits you best for that character and for dealing with certain matchups that could cause trouble.
We also got a sneak peek at the game’s story with the full prologue that was shown off as well. The story is to take place after the events MKX with Shinnok being tortured by Raiden following the fight that happened at the end of the last game. According to the official description of the ‘Official Story Prologue Trailer’ it states,
“Raiden has upset the balance of history with the death of Shinnok. Tired of Earthrealm’s defiance, Kronika, The Keeper of Time will bring order to the universe through any means necessary.”
With regards to Kronika as a character, it is unknown currently as to whether this character will be playable or just related to the story. We’ll need to wait for more information in the coming months to find out. (Trailer shown below contains NSFW footage.)
To close out the Mortal Kombat 11 reveal, NetherRealm’s community manager Tyler Lansdown confirmed that there will be regular Kombat Kast streams happening on their official Twitch channel to make new announcements up until the launch of the game. Finally, if you pre-order the game, you will receive access to a beta of MK11 with a current date of 28th March 2019. No other details were revealed at this point, so we’ll have to wait until later on for further information.
The game is confirmed to be released on the 23rd April 2019.
