The future of the Mario & Luigi RPG series has been doubtful ever since series developer AlphaDream closed last year. However, a recent trademark filing by Nintendo suggests a new title in the series could be on the way.
It’s worth remembering that news like this is far from an official announcement, although it certainly is a positive sign. The trademark information specifically describes “computer game cartridges” and “computer game software” implying it’s likely regarding a future release.
AlphaDream developed every entry in the series from SuperStar Saga to Paper Jam, including the recent remakes of earlier titles. The developer filed for bankruptcy in October 2019, forcing it to close. Nintendo has yet to make any official comment on the future of the franchise, although this new trademark suggests news could be on the way.
However, we recommend against any hardcore Mario & Luigi fans donning their hats or polishing their hammers just yet. It’s not uncommon for companies to renew trademarks for titles they don’t currently have in development just to protect IP.
In the past, Nintendo has registered trademarks for titles such as “Pokémon UltraShiny” and “Pokémon Gray“, despite no such games existing. However, trademark information did lead to the early reveal of Pokémon Sun and Moon.
