Finally something of substance we can all get very excited about. Well, if you have a PlayStation anyway. Revealed yesterday, Horizon Forbidden West, sequel to 2017’s exception debut from Guerilla Games got a confirmed release date. On February 18th, 2022, Forbidden West comes to PlayStation 4 and 5, with pre-orders accepted from September 2nd this year.
It feels like forever since we last glimpsed a sneak peak at gameplay footage of this much-anticipated sequel. Sony’s State of Play first aired the clip way back at the end of May. Since then pulses have been racing, mouths salivating for anything more from this sumptuous title. Aside from that absolutely gorgeous graphics, the clip highlighted some of Aloy’s new skills and traversal mechanics, like swimming, free-climbing and some bone-crunching fisticuffs.
For those who missed it (how could you) give your own personal hype train a shot of adrenaline and check out the original showcase below.
The State of Play showcase back in May gave us our first tantalising look at Horizon Forbidden West
The showcase bookmarked a significant milestone for Horizon Forbidden West as the development entered into it’s final stage. The team at Sony commented directly that the game was on track but some uncertainty around how long the required level of polish would take. So no release details at that time. From the PlayStation Blog,
It’s no surprise that our teams were hugely impacted by the global pandemic; we have been adjusting to new workflows, protocols, and other challenges, while keeping our teams safe and prioritizing a healthy work/life balance…
While the decision to move the game’s launch to 2022 certainly wasn’t easy, we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our fans for their unwavering support; we know how much you’ve been looking forward to reuniting with Aloy and her friends, continuing her story, and exploring a new and more dangerous world. Your passion, fan art, cosplay, virtual photography, and videos have meant the world to all of us.Mathijs de Jonge, Game Director, Guerilla
To Sony we say all is forgiven. February is basically this year anyway, isn’t it? But the good news doesn’t stop there. Included in the blog post, Sony go on to confirm that as of now the much requested performance patch for Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5 is now live! Central to this patch is the upgrade to 60fps for all owners of the game for the latest Sony console.
So a big day all around for Sony and for this absolutely fantastic series. Horizon was, in my opinion one of the standout titles of the last generation. A truly engaging, and original story in a veritable sea of post-apocalyptic titles to choose from. An interesting move from Sony deciding to release Horizon Forbidden West on both the PlayStation 4 and 5; a move that might even have got me over the purchase line. Perhaps when they clip those wings a little…
