Google is Officially Winding Stadia Service Down

Google is finally pulling the plug on its Stadia cloud streaming platform.

Phil Harrison, Vice President and General Manager of Stadia made the announcement via a recent blog post;

“A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service”.

Which, honestly, sucks. Stadia has been my personal go-to platform for gaming for a good two years now. I’ve sunk dozens of hours into Cyberpunk 2077, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Control, and much more besides.

Thankfully, Google has said it will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases (Stadia controller, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages) and software transactions (games and add-on purchases). Stadia Pro subscriptions, naturally, will not be refunded.

All of us Stadia players have until 18th January 2023 to play any games we currently have in our libraries.

However, anyone looking to add new games to said libraries is out of luck as the Stadia Store has already been closed down.

To say the platform has had a rocky life would be an understatement.

From the botched launch and subsequent mishandling of marketing to the general toxicity aimed at the platform by outsiders, Stadia did not have too much of a chance.

Frustratingly, in various performance tests I conducted over the last 12 months, Stadia was more often than not, the best performing streaming platform (against Nvidia’s GeForce Now and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate). The technology used was without equal, plain and simple.

Alas, Google does have a habit of pulling the plug on its own products, regardless of how well they perform.

Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll be lamenting the loss and ignoring Darren’s “I told you so’s” that will inevitably be bombarding the ABG Discord channel.

Well, that didn’t take long
