God of War: Ragnarok Features An Entirely New Combat System

Kratos universally accepted as the angriest man in the nine realms is back slaying another pantheon of gods paired with his now teenage son Atreus. God of War: Ragnarok is less than a month away from release. And to get the hype train going Santa Monica just dropped a new video showing how the combat system has evolved for Ragnarok.

Combat designer Stephen Oyarijivbie explains how the new combat system works similarly to chess, in the way that players will need to think more tactically and adapt to different combat scenarios on the fly. However, don’t think that combat is going to be slow and boring in God of War: Ragnarok. Players will have to read new enemies and learn how they defend and attack.

Our design philosophy for creating new and memorable enemies is basically making them a combat puzzle, similar to like chess and focusing on the chess pieces. Each piece has its own theme and its own use.
