GDC 2020 Has Been Postponed

The Coronavirus has had an otherwise overlooked and profound effect on the gaming industry. Several games have been delayed and developers have been pulling out of gaming events left and right. The latest impact the virus has had is the postponement of the GDC event

The upcoming GDC (Game Developers Conference) would have taken place this March.

However, due to a number of reasons – mainly following several high-profile attendees pulling out over fears of the Coronavirus – the event has had to be postponed.

The GDC made the announcement late on 28th February:

The announcement reads as follows:

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.

Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC.

For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.

It’s a difficult situation for everyone to find themselves in. Big-name companies like Sony, Microsoft, EA, Facebook, and even Hideo Kojima himself have all pulled out. However, the GDC has noted that attendees can instead record their presentations to be uploaded to the GDC YouTube.

Currently, the GDC event does not have a rescheduled date aside from being “later in the summer”. This will be of small comfort to smaller devs who will have already paid for travel and accommodation to attend the event.
