Experience a New Hell in Chernobyl in Volframe’s S.W.A.N.

As the 34th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster has come and gone, Volframe is getting ready to unleash S.W.A.N. on us. Stay tuned for more information on this FPS psychological horro.

S.W.A.N. spawns a new fear and Hell associated with the Chernobyl Disaster.

Releasing on PC and Nintendo Switch next year, S.W.A.N. puts players in amongst the irradiated ruins of the city of Pripyat.

For anyone unfamiliar, the Chernobyl Disaster marks the day the Chernobyl nuclear power station suffered a series of massive explosions. An unexpected surge of power caused the explosions. Far-reaching radiation leaked from the facility causing widespread damage to the environment.

Of course, this is only a small paraphrasing of the whole series of events.

The event has inspired S.W.A.N. and its developers, Volframe. Publishers Art Games Studio S.A. CEO Jakub Bąk has commented on the game:

S.W.A.N. is an intriguing project that defies schemes. If we were to make some kind of genre classification, the best term here would be the psychological FPS horror with elements of logical games and science fiction. Players can count on unique, full of disturbing and surreal elements story referring to both the Chernobyl disaster and the fascinating motive of unknown diseases”.

Welcome to the Exclusion Zone

S.W.A.N. (which stands for “Syndrome Without A Name”) is the acronym used to describe any rare or unknown disease. It also refers to a secret programme at the S.W.A.N. Institute in the game. The S.W.A.N. Institute is found in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

Various experiments were conducted on individuals from across the world within the Institute. These individuals had varying ailments and illnesses that did not match up with any catalogued complaints.

The events of S.W.A.N. take place a few months after the Chernobyl Disaster. Scientists form a research party to try and find trace signs of activity they discover occurring within the Exclusion Zone. Activity that is emanating from the S.W.A.N. Institute.

Gameplay promises to focus on exploration, puzzle-solving, horror elements, and FPS sequences.

Przemysław Kostrzewa, founder of Volframe studio and S.W.A.N.‘s author, wrote:

“The idea for the game was based on two real elements, namely the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and diseases that remain a mystery to medicine. Therefore, the disturbing world in which players will enter, will be something completely unique and fascinating at the same time. Importantly, S.W.A.N. should particularly appeal to fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Silent Hill and Amnesia games”.
