Everspace – Nintendo switch Review

EVERSPACE™ is an action-focused single-player space shooter, combining roguelike elements with top-notch visuals and a captivating story. It takes you on a challenging journey through an ever-changing, yet beautifully crafted universe full of surprises. Your skills, experience and talent for improvisation will be tested continuously while learning about your own existence through encounters with interesting characters, each having their own part of the puzzle to tell. Each run will be exciting as you will have to face completely new situations keeping each part of the game long-lasting and generating lots of individual, meaningful moments to experience. However, no matter how skilled a pilot you are, death is inevitable, but only the beginning of a much larger journey.

Everspace instantly felt like a unique title to play on the Nintendo Switch, the whole game feels geared up for the mindset of getting in one more run before work or on your lunch break. The constant cycle of trying to get through as many randomly generated sectors as you can before dying, collecting supplies and credits on each journey enables you to upgrade your ship permanently after every death enabling you to, hopefully, get that extra bit further on your next journey. As you journey through each sector you will encounter numerous factions some hostile and some who will only attack in retaliation, this gives each encounter a very organic feel and was a really good addition to the game.

You collect credits and supplies by shooting mining colonies, crates and ships but ultimately you will be looking for much needed fuel to enable you to travel between areas using your jump drive. The is a decent story that unfolds via comic book style cut-scenes at the end of each sector but I am not going to spoil the plot for you but is just as engaging as it is cliche. There is enough side-quests in Everspace to keep you busy and intrigued but not enough to feel like padding which is perfect.

With a few ships each with different load outs to start your career as a space pilot you will have lots of fun experimenting and finding the best one for you, then the grind starts as you start stockpiling credits to buy better ships and better load-outs. The carrot on a stick motivation will make you play this game for many hours and with its side-quests, loot system and random world creation it never feels stale.

So on to the graphics, Everspace looks almost as good on Switch as it does on other consoles and looks gorgeous with some beautiful areas to explore. Its sound design is equally as good and does a great job of immersing you in the games intricate universe. I will say however that I did encounter the odd bit of frame-rate issues once or twice in heavy combat situations but nothing that ruined the experience and by the time your reading this is probably already patched.

Everspace is the Dead Cells of space shooters and can boast having just as perfect controls and game-play loop. It’s a masterclass in roguelike games and has a pretty decent narrative to boot. If you love a good space shooter or love a good roguelike then definitely give Everspace a try and I am certain you won’t be disappointed.
