Even the Characters of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Aren’t Safe from the Covid-19 Pandemic

When we ask for realism in our games, we didn’t mean like this…

Valhalla; Plagued by reality

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the 12th main entry in Ubisoft’s history-spanning franchise. While the games have changed quite a bit across those titles, one tradition is still going strong this year.

Since AC debuted in 2007, most players have agreed on their least favourite aspect of the Assassin experience. There’s endless fun to be found exploring, parkouring and stabbing your way around the historical location of your choice. In every game however, that fun is occasionally interrupted by a literal wake-up call back into the series’ modern-day environment.

In 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the modern-day segment has provided possibly the biggest buzz-kill so far, with a nod to current terrible circumstances in the actual real world.

Back to the future: The persistent link to the modern day is still jolting in AC: Valhalla

As in previous titles, the modern-day protagonist (most recently Layla) can step out of the time-hopping Animus to pick up clues and info back in the real world. In this case, an email from Ramy Hassan, presumably a relative of Layla’s, can be read on a nearby laptop, in which he reassures her he hasn’t picked up the Covid-19 virus.

It’s no secret that games development has been majorly hindered by the Coronavirus situation in 2020, so we can certainly forgive whichever developer had it on their mind enough to sneak this most dismal of Easter-eggs into the game.

It’s no surprise to see a game mainly set in the Dark Ages to have some reference to deadly disease in it, but for the sake of keeping our time gaming as escapism, we would have settled for something a little less close to home!
