Yes, you read that heading correctly. For the first time, Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) will allow players to acquire loot boxes items without paying with real money. This is launched mid June bundled into Update 30 together with the new Endeavors system.
Endeavors are new daily and weekly tasks that grant you various rewards, such as gold or experience, as well as a new currency called Seals of Endeavor. You can then use Seals of Endeavor to buy any of the currently available Crown Crate items in the game. The Crown Crate items ESO‘s loot boxes) will include: potions, XP scrolls, pets, cosmetics and even rare mounts.

Nothing take your fancy this season in the Crown Crates? Do not worry, that is OK. You will be able to save up and continue to earn Seals without penalty or fear of resets. At the start of the next Crown season, or when the next set of crates are available and you see something there you want, you can be ready to buy it.
As a long time ESO player, this is a very welcomed change. I do wonder if this is in part (if not totally) attributed to the Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda. The Microsoft Loot Box Policy states:
“Items in loot boxes can always be earned through play. All items available through paid loot boxes in our games will also be available through unpaid opportunity by gameplay (i.e. grinding).”
For me, the reason behind the change is less important. I am looking forward to what I see as a positive change and I hope that other games follow suit.
