GamesIndustry.biz reports that Epic Games has recently acquired Cubic Motion.
Cubic Motion has produced substantial facial animation technology. God of War (2018) and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice both used Cubic’s facial animation technology. And, aside from everything else about those games, their respective facial animations are superb.
Epic Games CRO Kim Libreri said:
“Facial animation that conveys the slightest nuance of human expression is essential to crossing the uncanny valley.
We believe that holistically combining Epic’s Unreal Engine with 3Lateral’s facial rig creation and Cubic Motion’s solving technology is the only way to answer this challenge. [It will also help us] ultimately, to reach the pinnacle of digital human artistry with Unreal Engine”.

The good news for Cubic Motion is that all of the current employees are believed to be staying on after the merger. Furthermore, they will continue to work with any and all current customers and partners.
This also marks the seventh company that Epic has purchased since last year. Cubic now joins Epic’s portfolio which includes: 3Lateral, Psyonix, Agog Labs, Houseparty, Twinmotion, and Quixel.
What Epic needs all of these companies for is, currently, unknown, but it should lead to some interesting results.
