Sad news for UK based gamers as EGX Birmingham 2022 has been cancelled. The event was planned from the 4th – 6th March 2022 at the Birmingham NEC Centre. EGX organisers have apologized and confirmed that the event was cancelled due to reluctance from partners and brands to return to live event. This is due in part to the Omicron surge.
The EGX Birmingham 2022 event was going to be a new one for the convention. Typically EGX had two UK events: the indie orientated EGX Rezzed based in London in the Spring and the Autumn (larger) main EGX event.
Return to Birmingham
The main convention used to be held in Birmingham before a move to London’s ExCel Centre in 2019. This change helped exhibitors but proved problematic for many attendees who had to contend with an expensive trip to London.
As a result, EGX had changed their Rezzed event into EGX Birmingham in an attempt to hold two cons. Unfortunately, Covid and the impact on the industry have seen this event cancelled as well. Anyone who has purchased a ticket will receive a full refund.
Disappointment
Sad news indeed – this was going to be Any Button’s Gaming first mainline press event since the pandemic start. A rumour had circulated in the ABG offices that Senior Editor Olly S was going to buy a round for everyone in the pub. Clearly though, the organisers felt that cancelling was better than putting on a subpar show and we can respect that decision. So roll on EGX London!
