Though EA Play 2020 didn’t offer nearly as many exciting reveals as last weeks PS5 reveal event, it did offer the exciting bombshell announcement that a new SKATE title is in development.
After quite a lot of Sims 4 talk and an exciting look at the new Star Wars Squadrons, Skate 3 producer Cuz Perry dropped in to gleefully announce that a new Skate title is in development. It’s important to note that both Perry and game director Deran Chung were very careful about their choice of words, and purposefully avoided referring to the project as SKATE 4. Perhaps this is a sign that the new title will be a reboot of the long-dormant series, which hasn’t seen a new entry since the cult-favorite Skate 3 in 2010.
The announcement starts at 46:32 into the conference. While no gameplay footage was shown, it was nice to see some genuine enthusiasm from Cuz Perry, who’s room was adorned with leftover promo material from the SKATE franchise..
Fans have been clamoring for a new Skate game for years, and are about to be spoilt for choice. The skateboarding simulation genre has been a bit dry this entire generation, but suddenly 2020 will see the release of at least three. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 Remaster launches this September, and Skater XL before that in July.
We previously reported that EA had approached skateboarder Jason Dill to participate in a mobile port of Skate 3. As our report states, Dill had some choice words for EA about their offer.
