Disney Opens Doors to IP for Developers

Sean Shoptaw took to the stage at this year’s DICE event to discuss Disney’s future in gaming. Specifically, the possibility of established creators using Disney’s vast IPs in future, original games.

Following the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Disney is open to letting developers choose from their extensive back catalogue.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sean Shoptaw, Disney’s Senior VP Games and Interactive Experiences, spoke at DICE Summit. Shoptaw opened up at the Aria Convention Center in Las Vegas, stating;

“I’m here for one specific reason: to empower you to do really unique things with our [catalogue]. We want to tap into the power of creatives across the industry”.

Using the aforementioned Fallen Order and Spider-Man as recent, prime examples, Shoptaw reiterated the importance of original storytelling.

Fallen Order, of course, was 2019’s sixth-best-selling game, whilst Spider-Man was Sony’s fastest-selling first-party title ever. He also stressed the importance of “reimagining” what Disney’s IPs could bring to the medium.

Disney + Game Publishers + ??? = Profit

With Disney’s recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox properties, the pool of potential stories has grown exponentially. Of course, Disney already had a vast back catalogue of content that devs could peruse through.

Kingdom Hearts 3 producer Shinji Hashimoto said the following of working with Disney;

“Working with our friends at Disney through our nearly 20-year relationship has produced something that neither of us could have accomplished alone. The Disney/Pixar team have provided invaluable support in helping us realize our creative visions through this beloved saga”.

It will be interesting to see what potential future experiences can be produced with this open partnership. Obviously, anything Star Wars-related will have to be published by EA. However, as far as we’re aware, the rest of Disney’s IPs are fair game for publishers.

Shoptaw added;

“We want to dream big and look forward to all the things we can do together”.
