Sony has announced that it will be integrating Discord, the social network primarily used by gamers, into the PlayStation network next year after making a ‘minority investment’ in the company.
Revealed in a blog post by Jim Ryan (Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO) Ryan explains the decision:
Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.
Curiously this announcement comes a few weeks since news surfaced that Microsoft was in talks to acquire Discord for the small sum of $10 Billion. The talks have since fallen through, seemingly paving the way for Sony to jump in, although Discord has said that there is the possibility to rekindle the talks in the future.
This may be the reason that PS Communities was recently closed. It makes sense as Discord can bring fans not only across games but across platforms.
