Death Stranding a Response to Trump & Brexit

Critics have praised and decried the long-awaited Death Stranding in equal measure. Some have said it’s a work of art. Others have called it an “irredeemable piece of garbage”. Whatever side of the fence you land on, Hideo Kojima has produced something to either love or loathe.

And, in fitting with that mindset, Kojima has spoken to the BBC about what makes Death Stranding a game suitable for 2019.

“The era of today is about individualism. We may be connected through the internet more than ever, but what’s happening is that people are attacking each other because we’re so connected.”

“President Trump right now is building a wall”, Kojima added. “Then you have Brexit, where the UK is trying to leave the EU, and it feels like there are lots of walls and people thinking only about themselves in the world”.

“Bridges Represent Connection”

However, Kojima’s stance on it isn’t that any one country or community or individual is to blame. Conversely, people are still capable of reconnecting, and that’s what the new game is all about.

“In Death Stranding, we’re using bridges to represent connection – there are options to use them or break them. It’s about making people think about the meaning of connection. When we’re connected we have a responsibility over each other. But social media doesn’t seem to have that responsibility, for example”.

“Caring for each other is what makes people feel good. We’ve always been like that in the past. I want people to remember that and feel it in my game”.

Kojima’s Loneliness

In a moment of personal clarity, Kojima admitted how he is “very prone to loneliness” and how he thinks that there are “similar people [prone to loneliness] all around the world, especially gamers”. In a truly pertinent way, Kojima feels that Death Stranding can connect those who feel isolated and alone in the gaming community as well.

“So when those people play this game they realise people like them exist all over the world. Knowing that even though I’m lonely, there are other people like me makes them feel at ease. That’s what I would like for them to feel when playing the game.”

For a world that is currently as fractured as it is, it’s nice to see some people are trying to do their bit to fix it. Regardless of your opinion on aspects like Trump or Brexit, we can all agree on one thing; video games are excellent, even when they’re not!
