Cyberpunk’s Delay had a Knock-On Effect on Other Games

The problem with a MASSIVE game like Cyberpunk 2077 being delayed is that other, smaller games, such as ROCKFISH Games’ EVERSPACE 2 and Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile get lost in the mix.

The recent re-delay [is that a word? It is now] of Cyberpunk 2077 has certainly had a negative impact on expectant fans of the game.

However, whilst Cyberpunk is definitely* coming out 10th December, some other games have had to take drastic actions.

Cyberpunk‘s release will cause an inevitable hype-overload. As such, these two developers have had to push their own project’s release dates back. After all, would you want to release a game the same week as Cyberpunk?

Grinding Gears Games made the announcement that Path of Exile is now being delayed;

“We were previously targeting a launch date of December 11 for our 3.13 end-game expansion. As we discussed last week, our new development methodology gives us confidence that we’d be able to hit this date with a high-quality expansion. CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will now be released on December 10. We do not want to put our players in a position of having to choose between these two games, so we have decided to step out of the way and delay the release of Path of Exile 3.13 until January.

We still expect to finish 3.13 by early/mid-December. The scope of this expansion will remain unchanged. During the month of delay before release, we will start work on the 3.14 expansion…

…In the meantime, let’s all get out our Albino Rhoa Feathers and pray to Kuduku that they don’t delay again”.

And then, a mere few days later, ROCKFISH Games made a similar announcement. This time around, the affected game is EVERSPACE 2;

“Let’s get the cyber elephant out of the room right away; The Cyberpunk 2077 release has just been pushed back to December 10. [This] is a major blow to our planned EVERSPACE 2 Early Access release in mid-December. Not only will every media outlet and content creator cover the, arguably, most-anticipated AAA game in history throughout the entire holiday season (and not much else); we also know that there’s quite a bit of audience overlap within our community (and our team), so…

After a quick consultation with our marketing friends at Evolve PR, Plan Of Attack, and Swordfish PR, we’ve decided to push back the EVERSPACE 2 Early Access release to January”.

It’s a major blow for both developers. However, they both realise it would, ultimately, be better than trying to compete against Cyberpunk 2077. We’ll wait and see if there are any more delays between now and then. Fingers crossed, as there’s been far too many this year.

*There are a few rumblings that CD Projekt Red might delay Cyberpunk again. At time of press, these are merely rumours and speculation. However, if something materialises, we'll have it covered.
