In a recent blog post, developer Modus announced that their highly anticipated indie JRPG, Cris Tales, will release sometime early next year. The initial release date for the game was November 17, 2020.
Cris Tales is a game about a protagonist with powers to experience the past, present, and future all at the same time. The developer describes it as “an homage to the golden age of JRPGs”, while still aiming at being “a completely innovative experience within the genre”. The time-manipulating abilities of the protagonist, Crisbell, are used in various situations throughout the adventure. She can implement them in a similar way to what you might find in The Messenger. You can go to a certain village and see a couple with a newborn baby. If you go to the past you will see the couple before they met each other. If you go to the future, however, you might find the newborn baby as a fully grown adult.
However, these abilities aren’t only used for exploring. Crisbell will also be able to use them for her advantage during combat. For instance, she will be able to turn her foes old and weak to give her the upper hand. This gives some MGS nostalgia (The End, anyone?), but there’s even more to it. The developer seems very creative, so it is safe to bet that there will be very interesting ways of using these powers.

The recent delay is intended to give the developer more time to fine-tune the game. As mentioned in the blog post, the developer is “a very small video game development studio”. Players gave the developer some feedback after a recent demo, and now the developer is keen on getting it right. The developer has been working on this game since 2014. However, they mentioned that working on it is like working on three different games (each zone needs to have a past, present, and future version). This might come across as ambitious, but the developer seems very passionate about this project and so far it looks very promising.
