Compulsion Games (of We Happy Few fame) is officially working on its next game.
The studio, based in Canada, has only produced two titles thus far – despite being around for over 12 years.
Despite that, Microsoft swooped in and acquired the studio during the development of We Happy Few, which launched on Xbox under the “Game Preview” banner.
Compulsion’s Naila Hadjas recently spoke to Xbox Squad. Xbox Squad asked Hadjas about the studio’s new project, and when production on it began.
“A few month after We Happy Few. There was a lot of brainstorming between a few people, it started very lightly. It was gradually evolving and more and more people joined the team and now everyone is on it”.
Xbox Squad also asked how far along production on the new project was.
“We are in full development. We are in full swing, hand in hand, on the ‘hard‘ stages of the project”.
As mentioned above, We Happy Few launched on Xbox under the Game Preview banner. This helped Compulsion to iron out some aspects of the game. Xbox Squad asked whether or not Compulsion would launch its new project under the same banner;
“No, not at all. The Game Preview … was really to test the game with the community because it was a rogue-like, a survival. And since it was our first, we wanted to see if things were well balanced. So we needed feedback from the community.
With our new game, a narrative, third-person, story game, I don’t think we need any feedback. It’s not like a rogue-like where you replay it multiple times and you need data to make sure the experience is fun.
We Happy Few has evolved a lot. At the beginning it was a rogue-like. And then we added a story because people loved the world, the characters, so we said ‘ok, we’re going to make a real game with an end and a story’. The next game is a story, we know where we are going”.
Currently, Compulsion isn’t giving away too many details about the new game. As such, we have no idea when it will be released, revealed, or even what the title of the game is. However, when details emerge, we will update you.
