Byleth from Fire Emblem is coming to Super Smash Bros’ Ultimate!

Super Smash Bros.‘ legendary director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Fire Emblem: Three Houses‘ Byleth is coming to Ultimate. They are set to join Persona 5‘s Joker, Banjo-Kazooie, Dragon Quest‘s Hero and Fatal Fury‘s Terry Bogard as the final member of the Fighters Pass DLC roster.

Who is Byleth?

Fire Emblem is a long-running and much-loved franchise developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. Critics gave the latest game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, rave reviews and widely regard it as a Switch masterpiece.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is one of the best games the Switch has to offer

Byleth, Three Houses‘ protagonist, is an Avatar and as such their name, gender and birthday are customisable in the original game. In keeping with this, you can play as Byleth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in their male or female form.

Sakurai demonstrated a lot of Byleth’s abilities on the stream, although he kept a few details secret. For instance, he showed us that Byleth makes use of a number of weapons present in Three Houses, such as a whip-sword, a bow, an axe and a lance.

Sounds pretty exciting, doesn’t it! I can’t wait to get my hands on Byleth and see what they can do in Ultimate.

You can watch the stream on Nintendo’s official Youtube and Twitch channels.

What Next?

As with any Super Smash Bros. character reveal, a lot of fans will be disappointed. Many had predicted that Dante from Devil May Cry would be the new fighter. Others thought it might finally be the time for Waluigi to make his entrance. In other words, Byleth’s reveal will come as a surprise to many viewers. It certainly strikes me as quite a conservative choice, especially given the number of Fire Emblem characters available in-game.

However, the surprises didn’t stop there! Sakurai announced Nintendo will add six new characters to the roster in Fighters Pass Vol. 2. It’s hard to say who will be among them because, as we know, Nintendo has a penchant for keeping a trick up their sleeve. Having said that, we’d be surprised if Waluigi wasn’t one of the next cohorts, given how long fans have been clamouring for his addition.

What do you think of Byleth’s reveal? Which cherished video game character do you want to see added in the second Fighters Pass? Let us know in the comments.
