The Blade Runner game will be modernised for consoles and PC this year.
Nightdive Studios is remastering Westwood Studios’ original game. The Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition will release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. No firm release date is currently set.
The Enhanced Edition will feature all of the usual bells-and-whistles one would expect from a remaster, including:
- updated character models,
- updated animations,
- remastered cutscenes,
- widescreen resolution (not sure if 4K, but certainly an improvement from 1997 original) and,
- keyboard and controller customisation options
Westwood Studios’ Blade Runner focused on Detective Ray McCoy who hunts down rogue androids. Blade Runner ran a nonlinear story alongside that of the movie’s narrative. Essentially, the game acts as a “sidequel” to the movie – not being a remake of it or affecting it directly, but running concurrently next to it.
“You Were Made As Well As We Could Make You”
McCoy also interacted with characters present in the movie. Handily, actors Sean Young, Joe Turkel, William Sanderson, James Hong, and Brion James all reprised their respective roles for the game.
Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick stated in a press release:
“Blade Runner is still a jaw-dropping achievement on every level, so while we’re using KEX to upgrade the graphics and respectfully elevate the gaming experience in a way you’ve never seen before, we’re still preserving Westwood’s vision and gameplay in all its glory.
While you can enjoy the benefits of playing the game on modern hardware, the game should look and feel not as it was, but as glorious as you remember it being”.
Ray McCoy is obviously not Rick Deckard, which obviously means no Harrison Ford voice-over. Still, he might get a cameo role in there somewhere. Time will tell. Again, Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition currently has no release date attached.
