Blackwood Crossing Review – Xbox One

Blackwood Crossing is a story driven first person adventure game developed by PaperSeven.  It is an Intriguing and emotive tale exploring the fragile relationship between orphaned siblings Scarlett and Finn. When their paths cross with a mysterious figure, an ordinary train ride evolves into a magical story of life, love and loss.

You play Scarlett, an adolescent girl who is slowly drifting away from her younger brother, Finn. As a result, their relationship is somewhat fragile, as you will discover during the course of the game.

The game begins on a train, which quickly looks like Scarlett is dreaming. Characters on the train are frozen in time and you must interact with them to figure out the story line. On the train there are multiple puzzles in which you must complete to unlock carriages further on in the train, the strange characters each say something to you when you interact with them. It is up to you to get their conversations in the right order to be able to proceed to the next area. The characters you meet appear to be ghosts of Scarlett and Finns past, friends and family members that are wearing masks.

The puzzles you come across aren’t exactly challenging but they are enough to make you understand the story. At times when Scarlett is talking to Finn, you get to choose how she will answer his question; angry, sarcastic or gentle. Sometimes the choices lead to answer not making any sense.

What I found irritating was the control of the character, when moving to a door or object I found it difficult to actually interact with the item I was looking at because of how sensitive the controls were, even editing it made no difference.

The visuals in Blackwood Crossing are amazing, the design of the world is a lot better than the character design and their movement is a bit clunky. The music and sound effects that were added go brilliantly with the game and add that extra emotional effect and atmosphere when you are exploring the area.

    Overall - 8/10

Blackwood Crossing tells a brilliant story in a very unique way. The only downside is the somewhat clunky controls, but If you love storytelling adventure games and solving puzzles, then this is the game for you.
