Posted by Reddit user u/ForeverDexus, the 2-minute clip presents an early campaign mission with unfinished models and assets. The missions location is seemingly based on the map Seaside from Black Ops 4‘s multiplayer mode. It’s traditional in Call of Duty’s development process to recycle assets between its campaign and multiplayer portions.
The players primary objective is to “Find the Aquilus CEO”, while securing areas, such as a restaurant, along the way. It’s worth noting that “Aquilus” is not a name familiar to Black Ops‘s existing lore, suggesting that Black Ops 4‘s campaign would have introduced new characters and factions, rather than revisiting storylines from Black Ops‘s past.
According to a Kotaku report, Black Ops 4‘s campaign was scrapped mid-development and replaced with the Battle-Royale mode Blackout. The report also reveals that Treyarch experimented wildly with Call of Duty‘s campaign formula throughout Black Ops 4’s development. Before opting to return to the traditional single-player formula, the campaign was built around a two-verses-two mechanic.
2020’s Call Of Duty will supposedly be Black Ops 5. Last year, it was reported that Treyarch was taking over development from Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software’s previously planned title which was to be set in Vietnam. According to Eurogamer, this title will be Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War.
