First thing that got us, was the title. Aqua Kitty UDX. Cats and water? One thing that doesn’t normally mix in reality.
Aqua Kitty, A bizarre story about cats that dive underwater to collect milk that is stored under the ocean. Built on the special PS4 `DX` edition, Aqua Kitty UDX: Xbox One Ultra Edition gets a boat load of enhancements compared to the PS4 version.
Let’s dive into the game – see what I did there?
Aqua Kitty UDX: Xbox One Ultra Edition Gameplay is a trip back to the years of Sega Master System and Megadrive days of gaming, A 2D shooter with waves of higher difficulty as you progress over each level. This is a game where you have to be on the ball as you get attacked from both side of screen, you need to make sure you are able to defend the milk miners from being kidnapped or should that be cat-napped?. If a miner does get kidnapped, it can get frustrating but still the urge is there to continue after death. You can easily loose many hours killing robotic fish!
Aqua Kitty has stunning pixel-art visuals that bring the game alive. Keeping the true era of gaming 16-bit gaming. Shooting and trying to surviving in the depths of the ocean and seeing the stunning colourful skylines above the ocean.
We move on the controls now and at first, they are little strange but after a about ten minutes or so, they become second nature. The control system is very accurate during the gameplay. TIKIPOD decided to alter the way you make your submarine turn, this implemented by pressing the bumper buttons – LB or RB, so the up and down movement is covered by analogue stick or the D-pad.
Aqua Kitty does support Local co-op, this is a great feature to have. The only downside is we found it’s very chaotic and difficult to use. Making Aqua Kitty split screen would have been the easiest route, on the other hand it could make it very easy for gameplay. Making you share the same screen with your fellow players does add the extra difficulty. Possibly why the reason the developer didn’t go for the split screen option.
Aqua Kitty a great all round game. The music and sounds covers both modern and retro gaming well. Modern being covered by the crisp HD sound and retro covered by the sound effects as they bring back memories of many classic shoot-em-ups. Even if you closed your eyes and just listened you could easily mistake it for a classic SEGA or Nintendo Title.
The Story Campaign, Arcade mode and new for the Ultra edition. 13 levels for Dreadnought, Local co-op and infinite survival levels. Hours and hours of gameplay and all this is exclusive to Xbox one.
Aqua Kitty is one of them games that might not be for everyone as you do get a lot repetitive gameplay. Not much new happens throughout the game, only thing that varies is the difficulty level during gameplay.
- Overall - 7/107/10
AQUA KITTY UDX: Xbox One Ultra Edition is one for bringing back the 80/90’s nostalgia. Great value for money, Tikipod should be proud of what they have achieved with this Xbox release
