Anti-Spoiler Alert: Fortnite Was 2019’s Highest Grossing Game

According to SuperData’s end of year review, Fortnite is, once again, the highest-grossing video game. Raking in a formidable $1.8 billion in 2019, Fortnite topped the charts for the second year in a row.

In 2018, Fortnite managed to accrue some $2.4 billion – meaning last year’s takings were of a 25% drop from the year prior. Still, nearly $2 billion within your second year is a phenomenal achievement for any game.

All of these games are free-to-play titles (with a fair amount being mobile games at that). Outside of the free-to-play market, the highest-earner was FIFA 19 (for both PC and consoles). FIFA generated some $786 million, which, having only been out since September 2019, is a fair accomplishment in itself.

SuperData noted how expenditure on premium games also shrank down to $18.9 billion in 2019. This has been attributed to a number of issues. Chief among which was that 2019 lacked the number of AAA titles that 2018 had. Despite a better year for gaming (arguably), 2018 had Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and more.

The year before the end of current-generation consoles also typically showcases this trend. With the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 both within 12 months away, spending will probably increase going forward.
